This would force some Member States to close their coal mines on that date and face the considerable social and regional impact of these simultaneous closures. The Commission’s proposal suggested providing the Member States with a legal framework to allow them to extend the support given until 31 December 2014, Parliament having extended this deadline until 31 December 2018, thus ensuring the conditions for resolving this problem in a sustainable manner at a social and environmental level."@en1
