"Defending fishing along with the economic and social interests involved – over and above food interests – is not the same as defending the right to fish without rules or limits. We know that fishery resources are finite and that intensive fishing means there is no time for the exploited populations to reproduce in sufficient numbers. It is therefore important to create plans to maintain and conserve fish stocks, seeking to reconcile the economic and social interests at stake with the preservation of the species, which is essential to the long-term maintenance of fishing opportunities. With the amendments that have been tabled and adopted, this report defends traditional horse mackerel fishing and, in particular, enables 30 Portuguese vessels to continue fishing in the Bay of Biscay, which is crucial to the national interest, as is clearly pointed out by Mrs Patrão Neves, the shadow rapporteur of the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) for this report."@en1
