". Madam President, a couple of words on the presidential elections in Côte d’Ivoire, as I am head of the Union’s election observation mission in that country. Since the start of October, we have, in fact, had some 100 observers from 26 countries deployed throughout Côte d’Ivoire. The first round passed off quite well on 31 October. There was no fraud or violence. The announcement of the results was slightly delayed, but generally speaking, there were no major incidents. The second round is scheduled for next Sunday. It promises to be more tense, as there have already been clashes in the streets and the tone of the campaign has become aggressive, even towards our observers. Moreover, these observers are sometimes prevented from carrying out their work of monitoring the preparations for the campaign. Tempers therefore need to cool down so that voting can take place normally. It is extremely important to protect our observers until Sunday and beyond."@en1
