"In spite of the economic and social progress made in recent years, with Brazil being the most impressive example, 1 in 3 inhabitants of Latin America suffers from poverty. Children and young people in Latin America are affected to a larger extent by this scourge, with more than half of them being deprived of sufficient material resources. This situation is likely to affect their educational and career path, with a long-term impact on the societies in which they live. At a time when the EU’s trade policies must play a significant role in meeting the Millennium Development Goals, I believe that we must focus more on supporting the countries of Central and South America in their fight against poverty, in increasing purchasing power and establishing sustainable development."@en1
