Such progress should definitely be rewarded with further EU trade policy incentives. If we add to this the linguistic and cultural links forged throughout history, we have an opportunity to contribute, as far as possible, to the economic and social development of those countries, however varied their situations. It is also useful for both parties to understand what core elements are at the root of political developments in those countries and to intervene so as to prevent any abuses that might harm the countries and ourselves. We can only welcome the strengthening of trade relations, provided that development policies are monitored so that they continue to act as an incentive for improvements."@en1
