"A strong and modern Europe needs a future- and growth-oriented budget, while, at the same time, the economic situation demands reflection and restraint. We have therefore chosen to keep to a budget-restrictive line with the focus on broad investments in research, development and innovation that create growth and jobs in accordance with the Europe 2020 strategy. Since we want to see a Europe that is sustainable from the point of view of the economy, social matters and the climate, we voted in favour of investments in the environment and in human capital and control of the financial markets, but always within the bounds of existing resources.
An unjustifiably large proportion of the budget is still utilised for the EU’s agricultural policy, and tomorrow’s challenges will not be met by applying yesterday’s policy. We therefore voted against the proposed dairy fund of EUR 300 million and our own proposal to abolish the EU’s export subsidies for agricultural products, for example, as well as subsidies for tobacco cultivation. Since everyone has to do their bit in these difficult economic times, we also voted in favour of reducing the EU’s administration costs."@en1
