"I congratulate the rapporteur on having drawn attention to an aspect of the employment world that still results in excessive gender differences. The economic and financial crisis has undoubtedly worsened conditions for precarious workers, especially women, who bear most of the burden of precarious work. This is confirmed by recent data showing that in 55% of companies, only women do part-time work. It is also calculated that 31.5% of women work part-time, compared with 8.3% of men, and precarious work carries a higher injury rate and a greater risk of disease and exposure to hazards. In short, this is a situation of inequality to which the European Union cannot remain indifferent. I voted in favour of the report because I agree with the need to combat this problem and to call on the Member States and social partners to align, to a large extent, their legislative and contractual rules. I also hope that the Commission and the Member States will enhance their monitoring of minimum health and safety requirements in the workplace. Much remains to be done before we can guarantee women fair access to the labour market."@en1
