"Today is European Day against Human Trafficking. This merits our full attention, and we should demand that more is done than uttering mere platitudes about this tragedy, which currently affects hundreds of thousands of people every year in the EU alone. These are victims of modern slavery, due to hunger and extreme poverty, which affects over 1 billion people worldwide. This is the darker side of capitalist exploitation and the consequences of colonialism and neo-colonialism, for which several European powers have great responsibility.
Thus, there is a symbolic link between yesterday’s commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and, today, the European Day against Human Trafficking. Combating poverty and human trafficking requires global measures which include a break with neoliberal policies and a firm commitment to the social dimension of macro-economic policies in order to ensure a policy based on development and social progress, as the public and the workers have demanded in the demonstrations we have witnessed in Europe."@en1
