"Madam President, the aims of this initiative are to improve the health and safety of working women who are pregnant or have given birth and apply measures to balance family and working life. European women are looking to the European Parliament today and are expecting us to implement the modern measures that the 21st century demands. We therefore need to talk about the possibility of 20 weeks’ leave, covering 100% of the mother’s salary, including self-employed workers, the possibility of fathers having leave following the birth and establishing equality between men and women in taking that leave. This is not just about women. Talking about the cost of maternity leave is not only one more punishment for women; it demonstrates a lack of responsibility, taking into account the birth rate crisis and the ageing population in Europe at the moment, which is also contributing to the development of the economic crisis. Has it occurred to you to ask, for example, what the cost of absenteeism is in Europe? I have not heard a single word about this. We have the opportunity to make progress on equality between men and women, so let us not disappoint the people of Europe."@en1
