"The United Nations General Assembly declared 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity. The associated celebrations provide an opportunity to implement a global campaign to raise society’s awareness of biodiversity. According to Eurobarometer data from April 2010, only 38% of people surveyed knew the definition of biodiversity. We need to raise awareness of the significance of biodiversity in relation to the quality of human life and highlight achievements to date in the field of protection of natural resources, as well as encourage additional, more intensive efforts to combat biodiversity loss.
Heritage days, which generally celebrate historic or architectural heritage, or what the French call ‘
’, are very successful. I think that the Commission could implement a similar initiative and establish days celebrating our natural heritage, in order to increase the visibility and importance of biodiversity. I also think, and I would like to make an appeal in this regard, that in light of the forthcoming conference in Nagoya of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, it is vital for the European Union to state its position on biodiversity strategy after 2020 in terms of its financial policy and consensus among Member States regarding measures which they would need to incorporate into national legislation in future."@en1
