"I support the resolution on the situation of the Jordan River, because it calls for concrete action on an issue that has a direct effect on the economic, social and cultural well-being of the peoples of the region. The severe degradation of the Jordan River impacts on all aspects of the livelihood of the communities dependent on the water resources of the River. In calling for jointly planned, cross-border solutions to the issues of pollution and over-exploitation of water resources, the resolution underlines the confidence and peace-building outcomes that can follow on from Israeli, Palestinian and Jordanian cooperation in facing the problem of the River Jordan’s degradation. The resolution rightly stresses the need to include plans and proposals for the rehabilitation of the Jordan River in the Union’s relations with the riparian countries. Similarly, given the pressing nature of the problem, the EU should prioritise rehabilitation of the Jordan River in its development projects in the region."@en1
