I voted for Mrs Weber’s motion for a resolution on the Roma in Europe because of its balanced, constructive content.
It is not enough to shout against discrimination, perhaps exploiting real and extremely serious problems for the purposes of party-political wrangling. Naturally, we need to firmly reassert the principles of non-discrimination, of free movement and the resulting rights and obligations – as does the resolution by the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) – but more important still is to undertake practical reforms to solve the problems, in order to implement fundamental human rights. Immigration is a European issue and the time has come, as called for by Mrs Weber’s resolution, to tackle it at European level.
The Roma issue only partly overlaps with the issue of integration, and in any case it has specific features which must also be addressed at European level. The structure of the EU was designed on the premise of the territorial stability of the member peoples. A nomadic lifestyle may be a characteristic of a people, which must also be respected, but inclusion must come about in a spirit of solidarity, in accordance with European rules, without the individual Member States playing it by ear. This is the resolution’s proposal which won our support."@en1
