"I voted for the motion for a resolution by the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) on the situation of the Roma people in Europe. I believe freedom of movement is a fundamental right of European citizens, in accordance with Directive 2004/38/EC. This directive also sets out conditions to this freedom, which apply throughout the European Union: persons staying in a Member State for more than three months must be able to show evidence that they have a job or sufficient means to meet their needs or follow a course of study.
It is therefore important to see the social and economic integration of the Roma as a European issue and to find a European solution to it. I therefore call on the Member States and the European Commission to address this issue so that they can provide a European political response to it."@en1
