"I have seen the actions and statements used to stigmatise an ethnic group. I have also seen the statements that create a negative image of a state or people, something which runs contrary to the European spirit and principles and creates populist and xenophobic attitudes that undermine EU principles.
We cannot allow prejudice to be used against Roma for political ends. We cannot accept the presence of first-class and second-class citizens in the European Union. The aim of EU-level coordination must be to improve the Roma’s situation and not to restrict the rights of citizens.
The 12 million Roma, gypsies, travellers or Romanies, as they are called in their countries of origin, are a common problem requiring common solutions. I find it unacceptable to make any connection between the Roma issue and matters relating to the Schengen visa or accession for Romania and Bulgaria."@en1
