"Mr President, attempts are being made to accuse President Sarkozy of political actionism in order to deflect attention away from French problems, but this unfortunate deportation of Roma is evidence of major problems. In hundreds of settlements, the Roma live shut away in a parallel world and they often descend into crime. That, of course, creates anxiety and fear for the people living in the surrounding area. We must not forget the incident that led to the current situation. The cause was, after all, an attack on French police officers by 50 masked Roma people. The freedom of movement enjoyed by EU citizens must not be used as an excuse. I would also like consideration to be given to the fact that Romania, in particular, has a generous naturalisation policy and the Roma, in particular, but also members of the Moldovan mafia, are very generously supplied with passports. It is, of course, unacceptable for us, on the one hand, to want unrestricted freedom of movement within the EU – a mobility that has been called for many times today – while, on the other, passports and citizenships are given away liberally, so encouraging an uncontrolled influx into Europe."@en1
