"An ageing population is regarded as a future burden for national economies. Indeed, the potential offered by older people is often ignored. As the population ages, women, who live longer than men in Romania as well (the average life expectancy in 2008 was 76 years for women and 69 years for men), are more vulnerable, especially with the drop in incomes of extended families. Greater opportunities for part-time work would help boost the income of elderly women. Elderly women are dependent to a greater extent on public and private services, as well as on the healthcare system. I call on Member States to develop services which facilitate long-term care at home as this would have an impact not only on the women providing the care, but also on the persons being cared for. The quality of care can be ensured through adequate resources and training in the healthcare sector. I urge Member States to promote public policies which will focus particular attention on these issues and provide adequate resources which will reduce the long-term impact. Political initiatives should be followed up by devising effective programmes and implementing them."@en1
