"As I said, the Bureau is going to discuss this in an hour’s time. I am sure the Bureau will take account of your comments. Three comments have been put forward. They were not in accordance with procedure, because there are no regulations in the Rules of Procedure which allow this, but I do not want to prolong this debate. There are representatives of the Bureau here in the Chamber, and I, too, am listening to your comments. We are all treating this very seriously. We will give it some thought this evening, and the Conference of Presidents is meeting on Thursday. Please allow us to look calmly at this. The Bureau will make an initial, preliminary decision today. I would ask you not to make any more requests to speak, because I have quite a number already. We know your objections, and I propose that we end the discussion at this point. We have all heard your reaction and the way it has been received, so let us leave this discussion here, and we will give it our very serious consideration. However, if we do have to end this discussion, it is with just one request: let us be here in this Chamber, tomorrow, for two and a half hours, because that is how long the debate will last.
We want to hold the debate with due ceremony, by which I mean we want to emphasise the presence of the European Parliament in Union decisions, a presence which we have not so far had, because it was only the Treaty of Lisbon which gave us such powers. Our own image and the strength of the Union are going to depend on our being present here. I appeal for your presence in the Chamber, and propose we end the discussion on this note."@en1
