. As set out in the Treaty on European Union, any European state, if it wishes, can apply to become a member of the European Union. Its integration into the EU is subject to its compliance with and verification of the membership criteria. In this respect, Iceland, as a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) and a signatory to the Schengen Agreement, is already at an advanced stage in implementing the
. Nevertheless, negotiations on key issues which are not covered by the objectives of the EEA, such as agriculture, fisheries or economic and financial policy, need to be seriously discussed so that Iceland can fully satisfy the membership criteria. It also emphasises the need for substantial reforms in the organisation and operation of the financial supervision system by the Icelandic authorities."@en1
