"Mr President, I would like to thank the rapporteur for her work. I warmly welcome the fact that this second draft of the novel foods regulation will finally enact uniform rules on placing novel foods on the market in the EU. This will take account of the high level of health protection in the European Union. As far as I see it, mainly ethical and health factors are reasons against the authorisation of meat from cloned animals and of cloning itself as well. The agricultural sector in Europe produces food of the highest standard, whether based on conventional or organic agricultural production. Stringent regulations and quality standards are constantly being imposed on and implemented by the agricultural sector in Europe. The precautionary principle must apply in particular in the food sector. We do not need meat from cloned animals for the sake of food supply security.
