"As if the Greek crisis were caused by statistical errors alone, the Commission is using it as an excuse to allow Eurostat to lay down the law on the EU’s figures. It thus considers that the wisdom of Eurostat experts is the final safeguard against the supposedly rogue Member States that are trying to hide something. Member States should therefore accept that this European Commission body will validate their calculations, oversee their management and inspect their data. Being granted aid from the Structural Funds could even become conditional on the handing-over of these statistics. This text is in the same vein as the one approved by the Council on 7 June 2010, which would force Member States to have their budgets validated by the Commission. It imposes a loss of sovereignty on Member States and a lack of trust in governments that have been democratically elected – unlike the Commission. This goes beyond the powers conferred upon the Commission by the Treaties and is not acceptable. I shall therefore vote against."@en1
