"Mr President, Baroness Ashton, I am delighted to hear you committing the European Union’s efforts on this issue, and Parliament will monitor the commitments made by the Council and the Commission. Israel’s attack on the humanitarian flotilla went beyond its limits of impunity in an attack that has been unanimously described as being in violation of international law: from maritime law to humanitarian law.
It was a violation of international law that massively and disproportionately transcended any consideration relating to Israel’s security, which we do, of course, defend. However, Israel’s security strategy, which is a preventive one, and the extremely high security thresholds that it has set for itself, cannot continue to be the parameter by which everything else is measured.
What we want and what we are going to ask the EU institutions to propose to the Association Council between the European Union and Israel is firstly, a credible international investigation into the flotilla attack. Secondly, we want the blockade on Gaza to be lifted beyond the system of lists, and for the peace process to be resumed with a view to a viable Palestinian state being created and internationally recognised."@en1
