"− The debate on the transfer of the personal data of passengers on transatlantic flights by airlines has been a significant sore point in the European Union’s relations with the United States, Australia and Canada, and it captures the essence of one of the dilemmas of our times. On the one hand, nobody doubts the particular need to protect the privacy and confidentiality of every citizen’s data. On the other hand, few people would deny that we live in a time in which threats to people’s security require, not just better information exchange between police authorities in crime fighting, but also better processing of this information in order to make it more suitable for fighting organised crime and, particularly, terrorism. I hope that the postponement in the process imposed by the European Parliament will enable a fair balance between these values to be reached."@en1
