"Unfortunately, a huge number of us are unaware that a new spectre is looming over Europe, namely, that of populism. We forget that, as a form of political governance, this may be one of the causes of the moral crisis which we are all talking about, underlying the economic crisis. However, this is about us and the political parties we belong to. President Van Rompuy, you spoke about budgetary discipline. Judging from the past, having too many rules can frequently cause shortcomings just as much as having too few rules. I believe that we could be much more flexible and could review the Stability Pact, because we do not have a vision of the future European model. It fails to take account of the reality and demographic situation which we are facing and about which we have heard no mention in the EU 2020 agenda. I believe that this matter will have to give us some food for thought because we should not allow a new design for the European social model to fail like the Lisbon Agenda has done. A second failure will deal a crushing blow to cohesion and inclusion in the European Union."@en1
