"On 25 March, I voted against the report on the effects of the global financial and economic crisis on developing countries and on development cooperation (), primarily because of the wording in paragraph 31 concerning taxing the banking system and imposing a levy on international transactions. Introducing a ‘Tobin tax’ would run the risk of undesirable side-effects which would harm the international market, which is, of course, the market in which poor countries need to be involved in order to enable their economic development on fair terms. In my view, it is not clear how the Tobin tax could help to prevent future financial crises without global consensus and support."@en1
