"Discrimination against the Roma people was, for years, one of Europe’s biggest taboos. In recent years, this has been changing. Measures taken to combat discrimination against the Roma continue to be insufficient. This problem is often neglected.
A very good example confirming this thesis is the lack of a reaction from the European Commission to the proposal of the European Parliament of 28 January 2008 on developing a European strategy on the Roma in cooperation with Member States. The need of the hour is to renew that proposal. For during the economic crisis, aggression directed against the Roma has increased. This has affected many of the 10-12 million representatives of the Roma community in the European Union.
I think the issue of the Roma people should be made a priority by the newly appointed Commissioners, so I decided to endorse the motion for a resolution on the Second Roma Summit drawn up by fellow Members from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament and the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats)."@en1
