At the time, I repeatedly and publicly criticised the way Dr Constâncio carried out his supervisory duties whilst in charge of the Bank of Portugal. The fact that he is Portuguese and my loyalty to the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) prevent me from voting against. However, my conscience and even my intellectual honesty could not permit me to vote for an appointment as a result of which he will end up as supervisor at the European Central Bank."@en1
