"The European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) was created in 2006 in order to provide additional assistance to workers affected by the consequences of significant changes in the structure of international trade and to assist in their reintegration into the labour market. From 1 May 2009, the remit of the EGF has been expanded and it now includes assistance to workers made redundant as a direct consequence of the economic and financial crisis. At this time when we are facing this severe economic and financial crisis, one of the principal consequences is an increase in unemployment. The EU must use all the means at its disposal to respond to the consequences of the crisis, particularly in terms of the assistance to be provided to those who are facing the reality of unemployment on a daily basis. For these reasons, I voted in favour of the present proposal on the mobilisation of the EGF to assist Lithuania, with the objective of supporting the workers made redundant in the 128 firms operating in the civil construction sector."@en1
