"The Member States of the ECR have signed the UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women and the Beijing Platform for Action. We therefore feel that for the EU to ‘become a party to the Convention’ as a whole is unnecessary and we oppose the EU acting in this State-like way. Whilst the ECR Group places great importance on equality between all people, we oppose further legislation at EU level; we believe the gender equality issue is best driven at national level with the involvement of civil society within local communities. For these reasons, we have voted against the resolution."@en1
