"I welcome the outcome of this vote, because the guarantees in the Council’s proposal to protect the privacy of citizens were unsatisfactory. Defence of civil liberties is a fundamental requirement and the fight against terrorism needs to be conducted in a manner that respects them. In voting for Parliament’s motion for a resolution, I wanted to reaffirm that the interim agreement should comply with the criteria of the Treaty of Lisbon, especially the Charter of Fundamental Rights. I also demand that data should only be collected for the purpose of the fight against terrorism and that European citizens should have the same ‘judicial redress mechanisms as would apply to data held within the EU, including compensation in the event of unlawful processing of personal data’. I welcome this vote, in which the European Parliament shows that it is fully assuming the responsibilities granted to it under the Treaty of Lisbon and that it is able to withstand pressure from the Member States and from the United States of America. It is a sign which bears witness to the new political balance which is being put in place within the European Union."@en1
