"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the free movement of persons is one of the fundamental freedoms of the European Union, and one of the pillars of the Single Market. However, a number of Member States are still continuing to impose restrictions on Bulgarians and Romanians with regard to access to their labour market. The arguments for maintaining the restrictions are contrary to market logic, especially during a crisis. Even the Commissioner for Employment declared some time ago: ‘The right to work in another country is a fundamental freedom for people in the EU’. He is absolutely right too. Maintaining these restrictions against workers from the new Member States creates anomalies in the market and contradicts the principle of non-discrimination which is enshrined in the treaties on which the European Union is founded, thereby tarnishing the European Union’s image. I urge the European Commission to coordinate with Member States the lifting, as soon as possible, of labour market restrictions for Member States which have recently joined. Fellow Members, I am also asking for your support so that we can achieve a truly free market and equal rights for all European citizens."@en1
