"Portugal is the sixth most energy-dependent country in the EU 27, so investment in ‘clean tech’ is of prime importance. I advocate a national renewable energy plan, with particular emphasis on wind power, wave energy (given the exceptional conditions offered by the Portuguese coast), solar-thermal and photovoltaic energy and microgeneration. I am also in favour of researching and developing methods, technologies and strategies for the storage of surplus renewable energy. I advocate an energy policy that takes account of economic challenges and social needs, while promoting sustainable development, without generating an environmental cost to be borne by future generations. My abiding concern has always been to limit our energy dependence, and I am sure that the way forward is to support and develop renewable energy, so I welcome the fact that Portugal is a founding member of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). That is also why I support the European Community’s endorsement of the Statute of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)."@en1
