Greater integration of women in politics, particularly in external relations and diplomacy, is essential to the successful implementation of the EU’s external policies, including in the areas of aid, development, enlargement, neighbourhood policy, conflict resolution, security and peace-building, and international trade. Despite a number of policy documents adopted at EU level on gender equality and women’s rights, the practical commitment to this issue is still weak and the budgetary resources earmarked specifically for gender issues are insufficient.
