"Madam President, to be critical of others in a credible way, one has first to be critical of oneself. In this respect, as we condemn human rights violations around the world, we must always bear in the mind the human rights violations that take place within the EU. Let me remind you of two examples. Firstly, Turkey, a candidate Member State, for the last 35 years has kept the northern part of Cyprus under military occupation, having violently expelled around 200 000 people from their homes. In Turkish-Army-occupied Cypriot territory, more than 500 Christian churches and monasteries have been subjected to destruction and hundreds of Christian cemeteries have been desecrated. Today 1 600 EU citizens are still missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus. Secondly, Britain. A Member State keeps under the sovereignty of its crown two colonies in Cyprus: the areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia.
