"The summit’s response was not ambitious enough. Where is the firm commitment to abolish tax havens and offshore financial centres? Where is the decision to moralise the salaries of banking executives? President Barroso, it is right to say the rich should pay for the crisis, because it was they who caused it.
With regard to the employment summit, this cannot be a mini-summit because employment is not a mini-problem; it is a major problem affecting individuals and families. This is not the way to restore people’s trust.
Lastly, I heard someone say that they do not need socialist proposals. That is an arrogant statement. If the defenders of neoliberal doctrine had listened to the warnings of the socialists, we would not now be embroiled in this crisis. Will they never learn? If they have not grasped the gravity and depth of this crisis and if they have not grasped what caused it, then I fear the worst. I fear that the crisis will continue for many years, which is not what we want."@en1
