"Of course we shall support this courageous report, which attacks outmoded practices – practices which are spreading across Europe as a result of immigration. Following the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, it is no longer acceptable for such practices to be able to persist in Europe and across the world. According to data collated by the World Health Organization, between 100 and 140 million women and young girls in the world have been subjected to genital mutilation and, every year, 2 to 3 million women face the risk of suffering these seriously incapacitating practices. We must not forget that such practices originate in social structures based on inequality of the sexes and on unbalanced power relations of domination and control under social and family pressure, and that this amounts to a violation of fundamental rights and causes grave and irreversible damage. We must wholly condemn and punish these practices. Immigrant populations must comply with our legislation and our respect for the individual and not bring with them these unacceptable and barbaric practices."@en1
