"Mr President, two and a half years ago, I found out that the European Commission had initiated proceedings against Denmark in the European Court of Justice because Denmark had introduced a 2% threshold for hydrogenated fats in food. The Commission did this even though there was scientific evidence to the contrary, which showed in fact that hydrogenated acids are extremely difficult from the point of view of coronary disease etc. Two years ago, therefore, I decided – in conjunction with two of our colleagues, Dan Jørgensen and Linda McAvan – to draft a written declaration. We were supported by 254 Members of Parliament from 25 different Member States, which was huge support. Recently, the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety published a report which gave the maximum level as 2%, which is exactly what Denmark was doing. Therefore, on the basis of the medical and scientific evidence, I call on the Commission now to adopt fully the 2% threshold, which Denmark’s system introduced and which is recommended in this report from the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety."@en1
