"In the vote I supported the common position adopted by the Council with regard to the package of two directives – the Working Time Directive and the Temporary Workers’ Directive, because this compromise has secured greater flexibility on the labour market.
According to the opt-out clause, individual EU Member States would be able to allow employees working within their territory to work more than 48 hours a week provided that the employee has agreed to the longer working time which, under the terms of the compromise, could be up to a limit of 60 or 65 hours a week, in accordance with the established conditions.
Today’s vote on the compromise position of the Council follows a five-year effort of the Member States to achieve a compromise. Working in the European Parliament has taught me how difficult it is to achieve a compromise, and I therefore regret the fact that the European Parliament has rejected the Council’s common position."@en1
