"Mr President, I shall be brief and I shall take this opportunity to say that the reason I am making an explanation of vote on these reports is that there were many of us in the Chamber who were denied the opportunity of speaking on the climate change/energy package. Our only opportunity to be heard in this House was to remain here and make an explanation of vote, so I beg your indulgence on that basis.
To stick within my time on this particular issue: we know that we have to reduce the emissions from the road transport sector. I think a great deal has already been done, because public awareness of this issue is growing. Incentives to encourage more efficient use of fuel and less emissions from road transport include the ‘disincentive’ of higher taxation on cars with higher emissions and less efficiency. These measures are already in place in some Member States. That is, perhaps, the route to success."@en1
