"Social Europe needs to guarantee that every European citizen can live decently on their salary. A decent job needs to ensure a decent living.
Respect for employees involves establishing a period for working and a period for rest, which will allow them to relax and spend enough time with their families. Children need guidance and supervision from their parents, but if the latter have less or even no time to spend with their families, this can have negative repercussions on the children’s upbringing. No employer must be able to ask an employee to work more than 48 hours a week.
I feel that the working time directive needs to focus more attention on the specific situation of on-call time worked by medical staff. I support Mr Cercas’s report which protects employee interests without ignoring the legitimate interests of employers, offering them the opportunity to adapt working hours to their needs. I also welcome the amendments which stress the importance of collective labour agreements."@en1
