"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, as you know, last week there was a European Council meeting and once again, as has been the case for several months now, MEPs were not able to enter. They were not even able to enter the press centre. I believe that this situation is absolutely ridiculous – we have asked them to intervene on this, but have gained no result at all.
I think that this is a real problem, not merely a question of vanity for Members who want to wander around there and show their face; I believe that we are co-legislators on the issues and topics discussed in that place. It is highly important for public opinion to have access to the Council, through journalists of course, and also through the voice of Members of the European Parliament. The current situation cannot continue.
We have asked them many times to take action, we hope that you also have done so, but perhaps it could be done a little better. We do hope that we will manage to win a positive result because the current state of affairs is frankly shocking."@en1
