"There is no doubt that children feel better for eating fruit. Apples, bananas and oranges prevent obesity and keep us healthy. In a way, therefore, it is understandable that many people have today voted in favour of a proposal in the European Parliament to subsidise fruit for school children in the EU. The problem is simply that the responsibility for our fruit consumption does not lie at EU level. It is first and foremost the parent’s responsibility to instil good eating habits in their children. In second place the responsibility lies with the municipalities and in third place with the State. As a federalist, I would like decisions to be made as close to citizens as possible. This is, in fact, something the EU wants too. According to Article 5 of the EC Treaty, decisions that it would be more appropriate to take at a lower level shall be taken at that level. I therefore voted against the Parliament’s proposal to increase the fruit budget from EUR 90 million to EUR 500 million. In the EU, we should work to lower emissions and increase mobility and to combat crime. More fruit, better exercise and fewer sweets are issues that are much better dealt with by schools, parents and local politicians."@en1
