"Intrastat is a single common system for European countries. It aims to reduce unnecessary bureaucracy and regulation. It is a flexible system and therefore allows for account to be taken of specific needs and solutions pertaining to individual Member States of the European Union.
Another important point is that both the Intrastat system and the international trade statistical system are based on the recommendations for an international trade in goods statistical system developed by the UN’s Statistical Division. This makes it possible to obtain complete and fully comparable information on the international trade in goods.
Ongoing collection of statistical data on important economic issues is very necessary. The Member States should make every effort to modernise and improve this system."@en1
