"Mr President, I am sure we all hoped and dreamt that Russia would begin to develop, become democratic and respect certain principles which are also the foundations on which the European Union is built. Those hopes and dreams must now be consigned to oblivion. The current situation is entirely different. I welcome the statement that talks on the partnership agreement and the EU-Russia Summit will be suspended until such time as Russia fulfils the commitments entered into by virtue of the documents signed. Furthermore, I believe the suspension should be for longer and that within the Union we should reflect on what kind of a relationship with Russia we actually want. Can we really go on referring to a common area of security shared with Russia? Can we really consider Russia to be our strategic partner, when it espouses values so radically different from our own?
I should now like to mention another issue, namely our energy security. To give one example, we keep reiterating the importance of the Nabucco pipeline. It has become a mantra. Now is the time to go beyond mere words and provide financial support for that project."@en1
