"Mr President, I offer my condolences to the relatives of the victims of the earthquake and I wish to express my sincere sadness. However, there are other issues that we must discuss and I say this especially to the Council, for I recall the remarks made by President Sarkozy a few months ago, at the time of the incidents in Tibet.
What we have just heard is a proposal to turn sports into bad politics and politics into a ridiculous sport, and this is unacceptable. It is unacceptable that President Sarkozy is going to represent the European Union in Beijing without visiting the political prisoners there. It would be shameful for our leaders to go to Beijing without uttering a single word about the harsh reality of the situation. That would be shameful, and these leaders could then no longer appear with dignity before the European institutions. It is essential that we come back to this issue in September."@en1
