"The agreement on including the aviation sector in the emissions trading scheme is before us for a second reading. I would like to warmly thank the rapporteur, Peter Liese, for the way he conducted the negotiations with the Council and for his efforts to reach this result. What lies before us now, it is true, is not as ambitious as what Parliament proposed. The emission cap, for instance, is higher than Parliament proposed, while the auctioning percentages are lower. All the same this agreement shows more ambition than the original Commission proposal and that, I believe, is a good thing. The aviation sector also has to become a cleaner sector and to reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases. This agreement is an important step in the right direction in our fight against environmental pollution and climate change, certainly in the light of the progress on the climate package in which Parliament is now actively immersed."@en1
