"I think the situation is quite clear, that if you have something direct to say to citizens they will listen and hear. We had a debate on European City Guides today but we got very little in terms of reaction from the Council and I think we need to bring more clear messages back to people about what we do here in the European Union and that we are actually here for them, not just to talk about them. I would prefer that Parliament’s representation took the lead at the Member State level rather than the Commission, but obviously I would say that, and I would urge respect and caution on the ratification process in Ireland. These are turbulent times and news emerging from the WTO is not assisting us in this regard. I think we have to be mindful of the genuine concerns of our voters."@en1
