"Mr President, I apologise for the delay, but I have just arrived in Parliament. I believe that it would be unrealistic for anyone to talk about cross-border cooperation in the case of Greece, which is the country that receives the fourth highest number of illegal immigrants, after Spain, France and Sweden. Now what talk can there be of cross-border cooperation when, on the other hand – is this not the case, Mr President? – we have to deal with a country engaged in just that: Turkey, which is doing that job; in other words, Turkey has men who are professionally engaged in transporting illegal immigrants from Asia to Europe. In addition, the financial assistance received by Greece is minimal – I am sorry that I do not have enough time to go into the relevant details – and I must tell you that if Europe does not help, I believe that it is Europe that will have to foot the bill for the people who today are pouring into Europe, via Greece and the Aegean sea, with its 2 000 islands."@en1
