"I will be voting in favour of this report and I think it is important that we take the opportunity to look in more detail at the use of coal as part of our energy needs. For too long coal has been seen as a dirty fuel and scant regard has been given to the possibility of cleaning up coal by use of new technologies.
My own region of the North-West of England still sits on huge reserves of quality coal that is deemed too expensive to extract, and whilst it is true that coal in its purest form is not an environmentally-friendly fuel, new, clean coal technology now exists that would enable coal to play a key role in our energy supply whilst not destroying the environment in the process.
We need to use our coal reserves better. We need to find more research money to make coal more environmentally friendly and more economically competitive. We need to do more to revive our coal-mining communities. I believe clean coal does have a future and I thank the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy for its report which at least starts this discussion going."@en1
