"Mr President, any initiatives aimed at supporting and stimulating coal extraction and steel production deserve the European Parliament’s support. The aforementioned activities are particularly important, because no rapidly developing economy can prosper without these sectors of production. It is also worth bearing in mind that the largest producers of these raw materials are located outside the European Union and that in comparison, the position of the Member States is very poor indeed.
There can be no doubt that the demand for coal and steel will continue to rise, driven by the rapidly developing Asian economies. Despite the need to progressively replace coal with renewable and more environmentally-friendly fuels, coal will remain a key source of energy and wealth for many regions of the European Union long into the future."@en1
