"Today, the European Parliament voted on the report on a policy to reduce unwanted by-catches and eliminate discards. The MEPs from the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) and the European People’s Party (PPE) voted in favour of the final report, as it contains a number of positive points. For example, it recognises that some fish species are known to have a high survival rate on release and that derogations from a discard ban are possible. This is important in the case of juvenile sole, as this species has a very high survival rate. The report also emphasises positive and negative incentives to reduce discards. This approach is more sensible than a total ban on discards. In the view of the CDA/PPE delegation, a total ban on discards is unrealistic."@en1
